The Ethics of Inclusion. Reconstructions of the Professional Ethos of Primary School Teachers in Terms of Inclusion.
Abstract
Increasingly primary schools are claiming to be ‘inclusive’ in their self-descriptions. In these occasionally programmatic contexts inclusion appears as a thick ethical concept. The project focuses on educational actors operating under the claim of inclusion at primary schools. It follows Bourdieu’s distinction (2015) between theoretical Ethics and practical Ethos. In cross- section of the ethical level questions of recognition/Anerkennung are emerging – from pedagogical (e.g. Prengel 2019) as well as from perspectives of political philosophy (e.g. Honneth 2018, Butler 2010). At the level of Ethos in praxeological conceptualization the focus shifts to the actors’ action-guiding “everyday morality [Transl. MO]” (Papilloud 2003) – a habitual self-positioning in the social space. In the language of Praxeologische Wissenssoziologie (Bohnsack 2017) as a meta-methodology of the Documentary Method this perspective takes into account the notorious tension between norms and habitus. The main data basis are biographical interviews conducted with teachers, educational staff and school principals at primary schools with and without inclusive claims. The aim of the project is the reconstruction of types of ethos and their aetiology under professionalization in praxeological perspective (Bohnsack 2020), thus delivering an empirical perspective on the ethical character of the claim to inclusion.
