Talk and Workshop: Dialogue and Argumentation for cultural Literacy Learning in Schools (DIALLS)

The team Digital Knowledge Management in Teaching and Learning invites all interested to a guest lecture by Dr Fiona Maine. Students are cordially invited to participate in the subsequent workshop (file in German).

Speaker: Associate Professor Dr Fiona Maine (Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge)

Topic: Dialogue and Argumentation for cultural Literacy Learning in Schools (DIALLS) https://dialls2020.eu/

DIALLS is a three-year EC Horizon 2020 project led by Fiona at the University of Cambridge including 10 university partners across Europe. The goals of the project are to develop young people's sense of 'being European' and enhance their understanding of their own cultural identities and heritages through intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. The project works with 300 classes across Europe and in Israel, using wordless picture books and films as the stimulus for discussion about themes around social responsibility and living together. Setting tolerance, empathy and inclusion as central dispositions, the project reconceptualises the notion of 'cultural literacy' as a dialogic social practice, rather than about knowledge of culture. The emphasis is on developing children's dialogue skills to help them engage together.

Dr Fiona Maine will outline the project journey and outcomes, explore the underpinning framework for the concept of cultural literacy as a dialogic social practice and how this can be promoted in classrooms. The key outcomes of the project are shared. The lecture addresses all interested. No registration necessary.

After the lecture, you will have the possibility to ask questions to the speaker and informally exchange ideas on the topic. Students are invited to participate in an interactive workshop with Dr Fiona Maine, in which they can try out the DIALLS materials, explore the potential of wordless media, and reflect upon how dialogues can be promoted in class.

The workshop takes place on Monday, 15th November 2021, following the lecture from 4 pm to 6 pm at the PSE (Hausvogteiplatz 5-7, Room 0202 – In compliance with the current COVID-regulations).

The workshop addresses teacher students. The number of participants is limited. In case there are open spots, others interested can participate. Please register with: maria.zimmermann@hu-berlin.de
