Competency modelling and measuring of scientific reasoning in students’ methods and mindsets towards science in the domains of biology, chemistry and physics

Construction and Validation of adequate instruments for the evaluation, modulation of competency development, measurement in competency differences, and description of qualitative levels in various university courses in Germany and Austria.

Funding

The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Description

This collaborative project between the Free University and Humboldt University of Berlin, the IQB, the University of Vienna, and the University of Innsbruck aimed at measuring competencies in terms of scientific knowledge acquisition in teacher trainees. Three PhD projects gathered longitudinal data on knowledge acquisition at the beginning and end of B.Sc. and M.Ed. studies in didactics of biology, chemistry and physics. The aim was to evaluate scientific competencies (observation, experimentation, model utilization) of teacher trainees in biology, chemistry, and physics as well as to describe the development of these competencies over the course of their studies.

Duration:

November 2011 - April 2015
