WiWiKom II

Valid Assessment of Students’ Development of Professional Business and Economic Competencies over the Course of their Studies –A Quasi-experimental Longitudinal Study

Description

The WiWiKom II project is based on the competency model developed and tested in WiWiKom I, as well as the test instruments that were used. The overarching aim of WiWiKom II is an objective, reliable, and valid assessment of students’ development of professional business and economic competencies that allows for appropriate interpretations of test results. Further, the project looks at interactional effects of knowledge acquisition and embracement of teach-and-learn offers.

The longitudinal design of the study allows for four measuring dates over the course of four years. The project follows a quasi-experimental design, examining constructs according to the multitrait-multi-method matrix approach and two group comparisons for convergent, discriminant, incremental, and predictive validation. Quasi-experimental variation is achieved through sampling by including not only two study domains (business & economics and social studies) but also different stages of training (orientation, advanced, and specialization study phases in the Bachelor degree course). Altogether, WiWiKom II focuses on four aspects:

(1) A longitudinal convergent design assesses the development of competencies with regard to learning opportunities.

(2) A Cross-sectional and longitudinal discriminant validation explores as in how far economic knowledge can empirically be separated from cognitive skills

(3) Longitudinal analyses focus on the test’s ability to predict success in terms of accomplishing a Bachelor’s degree.

(4) The study domain’s specificity is being assessed through a comparison of students in the social sciences and economics.

4.031 students were surveyed during a first inquiry in the winter semester of 2016/17; 3.623 of which studied economics at 23 institutions of higher education, while another 1.408 students were enrolled in social sciences courses at 16 tertiary institutions. The next measure date is scheduled for the winter semester 2017/18.
