Amurabi Oliveira(CAPES/Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH)) Project: Teaching Sociology in the Global South: Towards a history of the school Sociology in Latin America
This research project investigates the history and institutionalization of school Sociology in non universitaries institutions across Latin America from a transnational perspective. Recognizing the profound heterogeneity of the region, the study explores how socio-political transformations and democratic or dictatorial contexts have shaped the discipline's development, its frequent alignment with civic education, and its perceived "engaged" nature. Situated within the framework of the Global South, the project critically examines the Eurocentric geopolitics of knowledge, assessing how local realities navigate or challenge canonical Northern perspectives.
Methodologically, the project adopts a comprehensive, mixed-methods approach consisting of a systemic literature review, textbooks, extensive documentary and curriculum analysis across key digital and physical archives. While establishing a broader regional mapping, the study provides a comparative, in-depth analysis of three strategic case studies: Brazil, Cuba and Mexico.

Seyma AksoyDAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – German Academic Exchange Service)Project Title & Abstract: Community Building in Exile: German-Jewish Scholars and the Transformation of Higher Education in Early Republican Türkiye (1933–1955) This project examines how German-Jewish scholars who fled Nazi persecution after 1933 built academic communities in Türkiye and shaped the secularization of Turkish higher education. While previous research has focused on these scholars' individual contributions and mobility, this study reframes exile as a collective, community-building process. Drawing on diaspora theory, social capital, and communities-of-practice approaches, it examines to what extent and in what ways roughly seventy émigré scholars—heterogeneous in religion, politics, and discipline—formed communities, both among themselves and in relation to Turkish society, state officials, Turkish colleagues, and religious institutions. The project combines biographical research with social network analysis (SNA), drawing on archival sources from Istanbul University, Ankara University, and the German Exile Archive in Frankfurt am Main, analyzing personnel files, correspondence, memoirs, and institutional records to reconstruct individual trajectories and relational structures. Expected outcomes include peer-reviewed articles, an open-access biographical dataset, and network visualizations of the émigré community between 1933 and 1955, offering new insights into how diasporic communities shape and are shaped by their host institutions, and contributing to debates on academic exile, community formation, and secularization in early Republican Türkiye. |

Vor allem war es wichtig, meine Themen und Fragen transnational und transkulturell zu betrachten. Der Forschungsaufenthalt war sehr freundlich mit allen KollegInnen im Institut. |
