General Information on Public Transport

(Position plans and directions to the conference venue please find below.)

Berlin public transport is divided into three zones – A, B, C. Zone A contains the main city districts, Zone B contains those areas that lie just outside the main city districts, and Zone C contains areas located on the outskirts of the city. There are two types of trains in service: the U-Bahn, which runs mainly underground, and the S-Bahn, which runs overground. There are also tram (MetroTram/Straßenbahn) and (metro) bus networks.

Depending on your needs, you can buy a single ticket, a day ticket (“Tageskarte”) AB or ABC or a BerlinWelcomeCard. Please be aware that a day ticket is valid from the time you validate the ticket up until 3am the following day, not for 24 hours. BerlinWelcomeCards are available for either 48 hours (AB is presently 18,50 €) or 72 hours (AB is presently 24,50 €). All tickets are valid on trains of the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, on trams (MetroTram/Straßenbahn), and (Metro) buses.

Please note that before boarding a train you must validate your ticket. If you do not do so you may be fined. To validate your ticket, please insert it into the validation machines located on the platform. For more detailed information on the areas included in the three zones and the tickets available, please see the website of the BVG: http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/index.html  (the Berlin public transport operator). This page also offers a Journey Planner which will inform you on the duration of a trip from one address to another.

The ESREA conference is located in Zone B. The Conference Venue at Dorotheenstraße 24 can be reached by the station “Friedrichstraße” (many lines of U-Bahn and S-Bahn stop here). Detailed information please find below.

Directions to the Conference Venue

The nearest public transport station to the conference venue is “Friedrichstraße”

On foot (500 meters)

To get to the conference venue „Dorotheenstraße 24” (also called “Hegelplatz”),  it is best to walk from the station “Friedrichstraße”. It is a big station with many exits, so please make sure you use one of the southern exits. If you do so you will easily find the street Friedrichstraße. Further south, you go straight on until you come to the first junction (à crossroads Friedrichstraße and Dorotheenstraße). Now turn left into Dorotheenstraße.  Go just straight on (cross 2 traffic lights) and reach Dorotheenstraße 24 on the left.

By Tram

Even if it is within walking distance you can also use the Tram. Use a southern exit and find the Tram-station at Friedrichstraße.  Take Tram M1 or Tram 12 (in direction to “Am Kupfergraben”) from “S+U Friedrichstraße” to “Universitätsstraße”.

From the airport to “Friedrichstraße”

Arrival at Airport Berlin Tegel (TXL):

From Tegel airport take the bus “TXL” to “Washingtonplatz/Hauptbahnhof”. There you switch to the light rail platform (S-Bahn).  Take any eastbound S-Bahn and get off at the station “Friedrichstraße” (just 1 station from Hauptbahnhof).  Leave the station through any exit on the right (i.e. right from the direction your S-Bahn is going). Then follow the directions above. If you are travelling into the city from Tegel airport you should buy a 'Berlin AB' ticket.

Arrival at Airport Berlin Schönefeld (SXF):

The fastest route is to take one of the regional trains (RE 7 or RB14) going twice an hour. Take a train that’s going via Ostbahnhof, Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstraße. Get off at the station Friedrichstraße. Leave the station through any exit on the left (i.e. left of the direction your train is going). Then follow the directions above. . If you are travelling from Schönefeld airport (SXF) you should purchase a 'Berlin ABC' ticket.
